Some Tips For New Students

Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) is a well recognized institution in the state of Himachal Pradesh thatprovides ample opportunities to aspiring Indian youth to pursue B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc and Ph.D degrees. Every year students get enrolled in various degree programs with the sole purpose of getting themselves well trained, and subsequently make themselves eligible for placement.

Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics (BT-BI) is a leading research platform, and is a high ranked department among private universities and institutions in India. The work culture of this department is very popular amongst Biotechnology Research Institutes, and the scope of students pursuing higher studies  from this department is also praiseworthy. This department is well equipped with state of art infrastructure that ensures rapid progress in research activities. Further, BT-BI is well supported in regular curricula as well as extracurricular research endeavors by engineering and science departments of the University. In this regard, the current trend for bio-economy for the benefit of general mass in India is gathering due attention, and BT-BI is aspiring and striving for excellence with the cooperation of other departments.

New students can be motivated by this inter department academic atmosphere and can think of hybrid ventures such as PhD in Biophysics. For the fulfillment of such a dream the active participation of Physics and Materials Science along with BT-BI departments (of JUIT)is necessary, and the student maybelong to either department. In fact the only primary concern is the interest of the candidate, which will be a major factor in the smooth transition between the subjects. The placement outlook of such collaborative research activities is also lucrative as successful graduates can find employment in academia, pharmaceutical companies (R & D), hospitals, medical research labs, defense & environment sectors, etc.

The education cost is likely to vary for different universities and Biotechnology Research Institutes. However, students are generally given stipend (or scholarships) during their registration period, which becomes a solid financial support. Normally the selection to such programs is direct admission on the basis of their performance in the Master's degree exam. In some institutions weightage to overall academic performance is also being considered. In addition, institutions can also opt for the score from an entrance exam conducted by itself or a suitable common entrance exam (maybe national/state level), as the qualifying criteria.

In this perspective, the decision of Nobel Laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is worth mentioning. After obtaining Ph.D. degree in Physics, he decided to study biology as a graduate student for two years to make a smooth crossover from theoretical physics to biotechnology. The outcome of his decision is appreciated by one and all and cannot be eulogized more in words.
